DIY hair highlights

It’s no secret that sometimes we all wish we could colour our own hair to save a bit of time and money. Our tips for DIY hair haighlights help you do just that and have the added bonus of being gentle both on your hair and the planet. Read on for our easy, low-impact ways to enhance your hair by creating subtle, golden glints.

Lemon Juice

Yes, that’s right! Lemon juice is a brilliant way to add natural highlights. Simply juice some fresh lemons in a spray bottle and dilute with water. Spritz directly onto hair and leave for a  few minutes, or sit out in the sun if it’s around. The natural bleaching properties of the lemon will lighten your hair in no time. This technique is perfect for light mousy blonde/brown hair but if you’re brunette, don’t worry, we have an option for you too…

Chamomile Tea

This herbal rinse is more delicate than the lemon juice method, and great for the dark haired brunettes. Simply brew a batch of strong chamomile tea, let it cool and rinse your hair with it after you’ve shampooed and conditioned it. You will notice a faint change so it might be worth doing this technique a couple of times to achieve a good result.

Beer

You don’t always have to drink it! Choose a light beer, rinse your hair with it and leave it on for 20 minutes. It’s also handy to keep topping it up with a spray bottle whilst you wait. The longer you leave it on your hair the lighter your hair will get. Yay!

Honey

Another natural bleaching hair technique: simply mix some honey with water to dilute it and massage into the hair. Leave it on for 20 minutes and then rinse out with shampoo and conditioner. Again, this technique is not as strong as the lemon juice so you may have to do this a couple of times to see a noticeable result on your hair.

Enjoy experimenting for that sun-kissed, summer beach look, whatever the weather!
